What is your personal brand? Just like companies, we all have created online personas of ourselves. Are you the outdoorsy person posting pictures of you in the mountains every weekend, are you the foodie that is constantly sharing about your new favorite place to eat, or are you someone entirely different?
Every individual has their own brand, but very few realize its full potential. Just how you conduct yourself in person affects how others perceive you, so does your use of social media. Here are 5 tips to help you successfully build and use your own brand:
1. Tell a story.
Whether you are telling a continuous story about the life of your cat or short anecdotes about your day, stories are a great way to draw in an audience. They are entertaining and also reveal more about your personality.
2. Share your passions.
Your passions are really the foundation of your brand. You want your audience to see what you enjoy doing and how you choose to spend your free time. We recommend choosing 3 things you are really passionate about and posting about them on a regular basis.
3. Be Consistent.
Post at least three times a week. This will keep you fresh in the mind of your audience. Also, be consistent about they types of posts you are putting up. Just as brands only post things related to their product or company culture, think of your personal brand in the same way.
4. Avoid politics (if you can).
Unless you are a political figure or highly involved in some other way, you do not want to use politics in your personal branding. Politics can get messy quickly, and you do not want to lose half of your audience because of your political stance.
5. Be Honest.
Your personal brand should be a polished version of the real you. Think of it like the version of yourself you would present in an interview. You want to look put together, but still come off as relatable and fun. Someone we think does a wonderful job of creating her own brand is Ivanka Trump. Her Facebook posts often include fashion or career tips, and talk about the work-balance necessary to be a working mom.
Personal branding can help to set you apart from the constant stream of posts we see on social media every day. A consistent theme and interesting content will engage your audience and help them to get familiar with you. A strong personal brand is very helpful when searching for jobs or making professional connections.
